About This Lesson
You may have heard...
It is estimated that between 30% and 40% of English words have a related word in Spanish, known as a cognate. The exact percentage depends on the type of vocabulary (academic, technical, or everyday language). In academic English, about 50% of the words are estimated to have a Spanish cognate. These cognates share a similar root or form, which can help bilingual students expand their vocabulary and comprehension in both languages.
